Belgrade’s Warring Identities

October 8, 2015

So, where are you from? – oh, you are Russian? No wait, you don’t have an accent… Oh you are American too? After many such conversations in a course of a year plus in travel, we don’t tend to over-think this part of getting to know other travelers too much. In general, we feel equally at ease co-existing in our Russian American or American Russian identities. Some days we are feeling chatty and we tell the whole shebang. Other days…

Wanderlust Friday

October 2, 2015

Driving through the Everglades National Park, Florida.  So many things to talk about today! First a BIG announcement — one half of our team (me!) is going to be attending TBEX in Fort Lauderdale, FL this month! Yesterday, Jet Blue had this crazy sale for $31 fares anywhere in the country, so this was what pushed me over the edge on going (kind of silly right? but sometimes we need just a little incentive to confirm the decision.) I am…

Why We Travel

September 25, 2015

Last week when I wrote the post about how we are trying to figure out life-travel balance, I was reflecting on why we travel. And then I got a little sappy, because the reasons were so many: We travel for that first look at all of your possessions sitting there in corner, packed up and  ready for the road, and your heart swells from all the memories and it almost bursts in anticipation of new ones. We travel for that feeling of…

One Year

September 18, 2015

The magic hour in LA, California. It’s hard to believe we’ve been back in the US for one year. What’s it been like? Wonderful. We’ve watched close friends get married and have babies. We’ve attended multiple happy hours, dinners, and parties. We’ve set up our house just the way we like, and bonded (again) with our cat. We got jobs…that we like. We like what we do professionally, we like our colleagues, and being freelance agents we have virtually unlimited…

Traversing the Balkans

September 15, 2015

Having read a bit about transport in and across the Balkans, I was slightly petrified of what could go wrong as we climbed aboard the train in Budapest to start our adventure across three country borders in as many days on our way to Tirana, Albania. The tales of massive delays, roadside breakdowns, potholes, herds of goats barricading the path, sold out tickets, and corrupt border patrols filled my over-active imagination. We had nothing booked in advance, and had to…

Wanderlust Friday

September 11, 2015

PCH. On the road through Muir County, CA. We’ve had massive 17 days. We were on the road with no stops till Brooklyn (eerrr Bloomingdale, Washington DC) from East Coast to West Coat and back to the East Coast. Between the two of us, we’ve covered 10 states and at least a dozen new to us destinations. It’s been epic at a breakneck speed — something we don’t do too often, but what better way to cover the USA than…

DC Like a Tourist: Chinatown

August 19, 2015

We love playing tourist in our town of Washington D.C. – it’s not unusual for us to take a day off and wander about the national monuments, go to a museum, have a fancy lunch, and stop by the White House just to take it in. D.C. is a beautiful city, and we love it so. We also have friends and family visit on the regular basis, so we have gotten quite good at arranging activities. DC Like a Tourist…

Wanderlust Friday at the Beach

July 31, 2015

My family visited us for a few days last week, which gave me an excuse to plan out all sorts of cool itineraries around the glorious tourist mecca that Washington DC becomes in the summer. We ticked off a bunch of well known sites and museums, but had the most fun at the Beach. (Typical, I know). The BEACH installation at the National Building Museum, Washington DC, USA.  What’s isn’t so typical is that the beach was inside, with A/C and all.…

DIY Danube Bend Trip

July 29, 2015

If the number of posts (4!) about just one city is any indication, it was pretty hard for us to let go of Budapest. We had all sorts of grand plans to see the countryside, perhaps chill out a few days at Laka Balaton, which we’ve heard is pretty impressive. But alas — Budapest had us at first sight, and never really let go. We did manage to get away for a day trip going down the Danube Bend to explore…

Budapest Thermal Baths

July 22, 2015

I am going to visit Gellért baths this afternoon, I casually offered Sergey towards the tail end of our stay in Budapest. I fully expected Sergey to stay behind. Outdoor wave pool at the Gellért baths, Budapest, Hungary. Typically, I think that there’s two kinds of people – those who like getting wet, and those who don’t. I fall squarely in the first category – I love all sorts of baths, swimming, water-related activities. I can spend hours swimming. I…
